A3: What a fantastic question, and one I think about often! It’s funny, when I started out, the image of an actuary might have been someone quietly crunching numbers in a corner, buried under spreadsheets.
While we still love our numbers, let me tell you, that image is happily becoming a relic of the past, especially here in Europe. The day-to-day work has fundamentally shifted, becoming far more dynamic and collaborative.
Thanks to AI automating many of those repetitive, routine tasks like basic reserving and pricing, my own work, and that of my colleagues, has pivoted dramatically towards higher-value activities.
Instead of spending hours on data aggregation, we’re now focused on interpreting the sophisticated insights generated by AI models, designing better algorithms, and making strategic decisions based on those predictions.
It’s exhilarating to use these advanced tools to solve problems that were once too complex or time-consuming! This also means our daily interactions are much more diverse.
We’re not just collaborating with other actuaries. I often find myself in meetings with data scientists, climate scientists, IT professionals, risk managers, and even marketing teams.
We’re working across functions to integrate new risks, like cyber threats and climate change, into product development and overall risk management frameworks.
It’s truly a fascinating time, as we help companies understand how physical climate risks or the transition to a low-carbon economy will impact their balance sheets, or how to design sustainable products.
The future of the profession, from what I’ve seen, is one of constant learning and strategic influence. Actuaries are increasingly expected to be thought leaders, guiding organizations through complex regulatory changes like the EU AI Act, ensuring that our models are not only accurate but also fair and transparent.
